Don't spend months growing your own herb just to stick it in a bag and let it mold or turn to powder. This is often a step skipped by beginning growers. Improper cure leads to moldy or dry crumbling buds. It is not hard or complicated to cure cannabis. Curing is just letting the moisture levels even out throughout the buds. I had a harvest in the winter and the buds were almost crunchy on the outside. After they had been in a jar for a few days they felt spongy again. if I had not put them in a jar with a humidity packet the crop would have dried too much and been powder with a harsh taste or mold and be useless. Curing also helps preserve the terpenes or flavor of your herb.
Step 1. Dry your herb until a small stem bends stiffly without breaking. The bud will sometimes feel crunchy. This usually takes 10 to 14 days, but I have had herb dry in 5 days during the winter. Some people use a humidifier to keep the humidity at 50% during drying.
Step 2. If you have not done it already trim the larger sugar leaves from the buds. They do have THC on them, but can be harsh. There is a new trend called "farm cut" where most of the sugar leaves are left on to preserve trichomes.
Step 3. Put your buds in a mason jar with a small humidity gauge. Plastic bags are great for taking your friends some herb, but they are not a good oxygen barrier long term. I put a Boveda humidity packet in my jars to help keep the humidity level in the jar at 60%. The packets and humidity gauges are available at local grow shops. They will keep your herb in the Goldilocks zone - not too dry and not too damp.
Step 4. Burp your jars daily. In other words open each jar and take a big whiff each day to admire your buds. This releases any excess moisture. Do this for at least a few weeks. Even longer if it smells so good! There is nothing like the smell of fresh dried herb! You will enjoy this step a lot.
Step 5. I vacuum seal my jars for long term storage after burping them for a few weeks. You can store herb for a year. I have gotten a buzz from 2 year old herb too. There is a simple vacuum sealer for mason jars made by Food Saver.
